Springtime in Provence, Burgundy & Beaujolais | May 6 – 14, 2020

Travel with the Columbia Alumni Association (CAA) from May 6 – 14, 2020, on a nine-day French sojourn through Provence and the wine regions of Burgundy and Beaujolais. Cruise for seven nights round trip from historic Lyon along the fabled Rivers Rhône and Saône aboard the deluxe Amadeus Provence. During your intimate, small-ship cruise, dock in the heart of each port town and visit six UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the Roman city of Orange, the medieval papal palace of Avignon, and the wonderfully preserved Roman amphitheater in Arles. 

Visit the Burgundy region where the hallowed climats of Beaune surround alluring medieval streets. Tour the legendary 15th‑century Hôtel-Dieu, a vast galleried almshouse famous for its Gothic architecture, and discover flourishing Lyon, France’s gastronomique gateway. The latticed streets of Old Lyon are home to Renaissance-inspired architecture and hidden traboules—tunneled passageways that sheltered silk-weavers as they moved their delicate wares. Enjoy an excursion to the Beaujolais vineyards for a private tour, world-class piano concert, and wine tasting at the Château Montmelas.

Experience Avignon, one of Europe’s great cultural centers, and authentic Arles, where stone houses and colorful market stalls are bathed in the region’s signature golden light. Admire the Pont du Gard aqueduct, a true masterpiece of ancient architecture. Tour charming Vienne, where a wealth of antiquities attests to past glories and three important medieval churches recall the city’s historic past.

Our trip will be hosted by Ken Catandella, Senior Executive Director for the CAA and University Relations. Ken is also a veteran of nearly three decades of advising private collectors on rare and fine wine purchases, auction acquisitions, and futures. Ken has also worked extensively with vineyards in France, Italy and the United States on market penetration and international sales. He frequently leads tastings and consults on wine dinners and events. Catandella is passionate about wine education having achieved Sud du France Master Level Certification from the Council of Wines of Languedoc (CIVL), the Council of Wines of Roussillon (CIVR) and Pays d’Oc IGP (InterOc). Ken is a member of the North American Sommelier Society, the International Wine Scholars Guild, Society of Wine Educators, American Wine Society, and the French Wine Society. He is a founding member of the Columbia Alumni Association Wine Industry Network—a growing alumni network of professionals in the wine trade and ancillary businesses.
