A Short Joy for Alma Hedman

Frances Webb

Two cultures, embodied in Alma, an ex-postulant nun, and Carmelo, a newly arrived young man from Puerto Rico, hit head on in an 80's era story about language and obsession.

Alma leaves her convent for an uncertain outside world taking with her strong religious beliefs and a handmade cross she wears around her neck. Her life collides in the big city with Carmelo who can barely speak English. Unable to get a job, he reluctantly enrolls in what turns out to be Alma's ESL class which is a new first job for her.

Both are outsiders, but have much in common and learn from each other.
