Barrel-Aged Stout and Selling Out: Goose Island, Anheuser-Busch and How Craft Beer Became Big Business

Josh Noel

Josh Noel (Journalism '01) writes about beer for the Chicago Tribune and is publishing a book June 1, 2018 about the rise of the craft beer industry, "Barrel-Aged Stout and Selling Out: Goose Island, Anheuser-Busch and How Craft Beer Became Big Business." The book tells the story of the ascendance of craft beer, mighty Anheuser-Busch’s inability to penetrate the landscape and Big Beer’s eternal solution to such problems: buying Chicago's Goose Island Beer Co., followed by nine more U.S. craft breweries. The result has been a craft beer industry upended, along with questions of what it means to be an independent business, to be sold and to be "craft."
