George Balanchine's The Nutcracker

New York, NY
Join the Columbia Alumni Association in partnership with CAA Arts Access for New York City Ballet's annual production of George Balanchine's The Nutcracker on Saturday, December 16. Start a magical holiday tradition with George Balanchine's The Nutcracker, the heart of New York City's year-end holiday season. Bring the whole family to experience this glittering classic ballet set to the beautiful music of Tchaikovsky. From the moment the lights dim, you will be transported to a magical place filled with adorable children, marching toy soldiers, a glowing one-ton Christmas tree that seemingly grows forever, mischievous mice, crystalline waltzing snowflakes, the Land of Sweets and some of the most breathtaking costumes, sets and dancing on earth. The production features a large cast of almost 90 dancers, 62 musicians, 32 stagehands and two casts of 50 young students to make each performance as magical as possible. The elaborate stage elements and intricate lighting unleash the viewers' imagination by providing visual effects that are extraordinarily grand. New for this year is a special add-on before the performance for Meet the Dancer to experience ballet from the other side of the footlights. A NYCB dancer will immerse the group in the life of a Company member during this 45-minute discussion and backstage tour, sharing insights into the life of a dancer and providing background for the performance your group is attending. You’ll hear interesting moments from the history of both NYCB and our home, the David H. Koch Theater, and have the opportunity to experience the breathtaking view of the auditorium from onstage. Please note this is open to alumni who are also purchasing tickets to see the performance.
