LAACU Nominations and Elections
If you are interested in serving on the Board of Directors of the Latino Alumni Association of Columbia University (LAACU), please submit your nomination to LAACU at VoteLAACU@columbia.edu by August 21. Please include a brief biographical paragraph.
LAACU will announce nominated candidates and send out electronic ballots on August 24. Ballots must be submitted online by August 31 to be considered valid. Elected members of the new board will be introduced at the LAACU General Membership meeting on Tuesday, September 8, at 6:30 p.m. at the Columbia Alumni Center, 622 West 113th Street, New York. If you would like to nominate someone other than yourself, please obtain the consent of the nominee before submission.
We encourage all Latino alumni from Columbia University to consider joining the new Board of Directors. Below is a list and description of the board positions. Feel free to reach out to the current board members at laacu@columbia.edu to learn more about the particulars of each position. Your active participation is the key to our success and will ensure that LAACU continues to grow.
LAACU Elected Positions:

President: The President shall be the executive officer of the Board and assume the principal responsibility and supervision of the general function of LAACU. The President shall convene all meetings of the Board. The President shall represent LAACU in its dealings with outside persons or bodies. The President shall ensure that any action taken on behalf of LAACU by any officer or member is in fulfillment of LAACU's goals and bylaws. The President shall oversee all committees and be a representative on the Columbia Alumni Association.

Vice President: The Vice President shall assist the President and perform his or her duties in the event of the President's absence or inability to act. The Vice President may be designated by the President to preside over Advisory Committee meetings. The Vice President shall assume principal responsibility and supervision of special committees and projects. However, any special committees or projects undertaken by the Vice President must be authorized by the Board.

Secretary: The Secretary shall keep the minutes of the Board and the minutes of the membership meetings, and shall be responsible for their accuracy. The Secretary shall attend to the giving and serving of all notices and shall attend to such correspondence. The Secretary shall keep all records of LAACU. The Secretary shall also maintain the official roll of LAACU members and share the roll of Members with the Membership Chair. The Secretary shall also, in conjunction with the Membership Chair, assure that only Alumni Members participate in voting at all Membership or special meetings. The Secretary shall work closely with the Editor-in-Chief to provide information for distribution to members.

Treasurer: The Treasurer shall collect all membership dues and other funds received on behalf of LAACU, and shall deposit said funds in the name of LAACU in such bank or trust company as the Board may select. The Treasurer will maintain that account and keep copies of all supporting documentation relating to any deposits and expenditures applied to that account. Separate accounts for scholarship purposes shall also be maintained by the Treasurer as necessary. The Treasurer shall present monthly written reports to the Board and annual written reports to the Alumni Members at the Annual Membership Meeting regarding the financial condition of LAACU. The fiscal year of the LAACU shall be the period of 12 months beginning January 1 and ending the next December 31. The Treasurer shall also make recommendations to the Board and the Alumni Members regarding LAACU's financial health at those meetings. The Treasurer shall sign and execute all contracts in the name of LAACU only when countersigned by the Vice President.

Membership Chair: The Membership Chair shall promote membership in LAACU to all alumni. The Chair shall be responsible for implementing membership drives and securing payment of dues by members. The Membership Chair shall also maintain the official roll of LAACU members and share the roll of members with the Secretary. The Chair shall also, in conjunction with the Secretary, assure that only Alumni Members participate in voting at all Membership meetings.

Program-Fundraising Chair: The Program-Fundraising Chair shall oversee the Fundraising Committee. The Program-Fundraising Chair shall assume the principal responsibility and supervision of all fundraising efforts by the committee to insure the financial stability of LAACU. The Chair shall work closely with the Treasurer to establish program fundraising goals and operating budget.

Editor-in-Chief: The Editor-in-Chief shall oversee the Publications Committee. The Editor-in-Chief shall assume the principal responsibility and supervision of all Latino Alumni Association publications, including but not limited to the LAACU Newsletter and Web site.

Student Relations Chair: The Student Relations Chair shall oversee the Student Relations committee. The Chair shall serve as liaison between current Columbia University students and alumni. The Chair is responsible for keeping alumni informed of events and occurrences on campus that relate to the Latino community. The chair is also responsible for creating events as well as supporting programs that foster the relationship between alumni and students.

Events Chair: The Events Chair shall oversee the Events Committee. The Events Chair shall assume the principal responsibility for the planning, supervision, and direction of events that will bring alumni together. The Events Chair shall work closely with the Program-Fundraising Chair and the Student Relations Chair.

El Regreso Chair: The El Regreso chair shall oversee the El Regreso Committee. The chairperson is responsible for creating the committee. The El Regreso Chair shall assume principal responsibility and supervision of planning for El Regreso.

Scholarships Chair: The Scholarships Chair is responsible for overseeing the Scholarships Committee. The Chair shall assume principal responsibility for overseeing the fundraising campaigns for Scholarships. The Chair shall work closely with the appropriate Columbia University scholarship offices.
