Antarctica
February 9–23, 2010

“Icebergs hang upside-down in the sky, the land appears as layers of silvery or golden clouds, cloud banks look like land, and icebergs masquerade as islands.”

Tropical Rivers and Rain Forests
April 18–May 2, 2010

The great rivers of northeast South America are among the world’s last undeveloped spaces. These rivers are important sources of the planet’s natural resources, providing over a third of its tropical forests and more than 20 percent of its freshwater supplies. Equally important, the rivers are among the world’s richest storehouses of an amazing variety of plant and wildlife. On this unique itinerary, we will explore the continent’s major riverine waterways, including the Amazon, the world’s largest tropical forest and home to one-third of all the Earth’s species. Our ship, the Clelia II, navigates close to shore, allowing us to experience details of river life and the surrounding rain forest that many visitors miss. Guided by naturalists aboard a fleet of Zodiacs, we venture into a labyrinth of tributaries, disembarking for treks through the jungle and visits to isolated villages.

We will take an air excursion to the seldom visited Kaieteur National Park, which contains one of the largest and most bio-diverse rainforests in the world. The centerpiece of the park is Kaieteur Falls, one of the most spectacular in the world. Framed by lush and unspoiled rain forest, the falls have a free fall of over 700 feet, five times the height of Niagara.

As Clelia II enters Orinoco’s delta — a complex ecosystem comprised of an intricate network of rivers, estuaries and channels spanning some 10,000 square miles — you will immediately sense that you’ve entered a world unlike any you have encountered before. As you cruise up the Orinoco, you will fall under the watchful eye of the jungle’s residents — the Warao people, who live along the river in houses on stilts — and its keepers — macaws, trogons, horned screamers, spider monkeys, and other exotic wildlife. During the three-day visit here, Clelia II‘s Zodiac boats will enable us to explore some of the shores and smaller tributaries along the river.

Starting in Venice, we’ll explore the rich interplay of cultures that is the hallmark of the old Venetian colonies in the Eastern Mediterranean: the Roman and Romanesque monuments of Zadar in Croatia; the Byzantine churches and Venetian-style loggias and palaces of Corfu; the magnificent Crusader castle, Krak des Chevaliers, and the beautiful Venetian fortress of Frangokastello on the island of Crete. We also offer you the option of exploring the Roman city of Caesarea and the Crusader sites of Akko, or joining a full-day excursion to the holy places in Jerusalem.

Voyage to the Celtic Lands
May 25–June 3, 2010

The Celts, whose civilization spanned two thousand years, never built an empire, or even founded a centralized state. They had no written history, no written language, no prevailing ethnic unity. Yet at the height of their power, in the 3rd century before Christ, their domain extended from the Iberian Peninsula to the Black Sea, and from the Mediterranean to the North Sea. Today, the Celts are most readily associated with the heritage, cultural identity and national consciousness of Ireland, and their roots run deeply in Cornwall, Wales, Scotland and Brittany, whose original languages were once Celtic dialects.

Come sail with us for eight nights aboard the deluxe M.S. Le Diamant in the wake of these unique and highly contradictable peoples, equally given to savage rites as to producing exquisite art, and who contributed immeasurably to the development and culture of Europe. Sail from northern France into the waters of the Celtic and Irish Seas, with their misty, legend-haunted islands. View treasures of rich Celtic heritage in Cork and Dublin, walk in the footsteps of medieval princes in North Wales and lose yourself in the austere beauty of Scotland’s Highlands and its Hebrides and Orkney Islands.

This unique travel program offers the opportunity to set your own pace in each port by choosing from the attractively priced shore excursions or time at leisure. Join exclusively guided tours and intimately experience both the Celts’ ancient legacy and its modern manifestation. Explore cities, villages and islands that abound with the living heritage of the Celtic people, calling at ports accessible only to small ships. Complement the cruise with an optional two-night Pre-Program in Paris, France, and/or the special Post-Cruise Extension to Scandinavia.

Virtually every day will feature a musical performance by our extraordinary onboard musicians and performers. We are privileged to have with us four accomplished musicians: Matt Herskowitz, David Gotay, Eddie Venegas, and Orlando Wells. In addition to the talented musicians, we will be accompanied by guest lecturers, whose lectures will enhance our appreciation of the music we will savor and the sites we will explore.

The musical events promise to be utterly magical, and together with the other unique adventures that await you—including visits to France’s charming medieval village St.-Paul-de-Vence; Torre del Lago Puccini, the birthplace and home of the composer; and Sicily’s compelling yet oft overlooked cities, Palermo and Taormina—this voyage promises to be nothing short of its own kind of unforgettable opus.
