Featured Exhibit

A recent donation of vintage football programs inspired the Alumni Center library’s new exhibit “Lore, Lion, Lore: Game Day Programs from the Rose Bowl Era.” These colorful artifacts of games gone by vividly tell the story of Columbia football in the 1930s and ’40s — the era of Lou Kusserow, Sid Luckman, Gene Rossides, and future Hall of Fame sportswriter Leonard Koppett, and the heyday of coach Lou Little. Donated by Mark Momjian ’83CC, ’86LAW and Mel Momjian ’86SIPA, the carefully crafted publications also contain historic advertisements that provide a glimpse of a very different Morningside Heights and NYC.

Columbia played in only the second intercollegiate football game ever — against Rutgers in 1870 — meaning its football history is longer than virtually every other American college. Here’s another bit of trivia: Which alumnus and former Lion wrote the poem, “To Lou Libble”? Visit the exhibit to find out!
