“Fake News” has been a buzzword ever since the presidential election. It’s been used by both sides and everywhere in between as many organizations have tried to define, understand and work against this troubling term. Meanwhile, it’s left many of us wondering how much we can really trust our usual news sources and Facebook feeds. It’s become a minefield for both media and its consumers. In that spirit, the Columbia Alumni Association of Michigan and the Detroit Press Club bring you an evening of analysis and exploration of current problems that journalists face and what consumers should be aware of as they choose their news sources.

ColumbiaDC | Walking the Battle: First & Second Manassas with Cornell's Professor David Silbey

Manassas, VA
To honor the recent sesquicentennials of the Battles of First and Second Manassas (also known as First and Second Bull Run), the Cornell and Columbia/Barnard Clubs of Washington present an all-day guided bus tour through the Manassas National Battlefield Park. There were two battles fought on the ground we will walk during this tour. Both of them can tell us much about the Civil War in 1861-1862. In the first Battle of Bull Run (or Manassas, as the Confederates referred to it), both the Union and Confederate Armies discovered that they had little idea of how to fight this new war. In the second Battle of Bull Run, the Confederate Army showed it had enough of an advantage over the Union that General Robert E. Lee, the army’s commander, began to think about taking the fight to the north. We will walk the fields over which both battles were fought to figure how both played out on the ground, how the soldiers experienced them, and how the Confederates won them.
